I remember being at a Quentin Tarantino fancy dress party a few years ago when I was in a toxic relationship and I wore a yellow jumpsuit from Kill Bill which another girl also wore. My partner at the time hated anyone looking at me - even in a jumpsuit covered from head to toe, and he got super angry if I looked at or spoke to any other guy. So knowing his insecurity at this party I spoke to a guys girlfriend instead and we danced and did shots together and she was awesome; whilst the other girl in the same jumpsuit as me was literally all over everything with a pulse including my partner who loved female attention. In the early hours of the morning we all shared a cab home and the girl I’d danced with put her arm around me as I slept with my head down in my lap which I didn’t know because I was totally out of it. All night until daylight I got shouted at for being a “lesbian” for dancing with another woman and her “putting her hands on me” in the cab; it was the first time that I’d actually cried in years because he wouldn’t stop screaming in my face and I wasn’t used to being treated that way. The moral of this story? Don’t let ANYBODY tell you what you must wear, what to do or how to act! Now when I wear yellow I think of that night being shouted at in my Kill Bill jumpsuit and I feel extremely empowered and thankful to have removed such wretched toxicity from my life. I now rock the clothes that I love unapologetically and dance with whoever the hell I want to without judgement, possessiveness or control.
