Only able to imagine being talented like my colleagues Cristina Mittermeier @mitty, her partner, @paulnicklen, the amazingness of @daviddoubilet and his partner, @jenniferhayesig. And while I am at it, delusional, I could be @brianskerry. Once I was in southwest Turkey for @natgeo working on the #sacredwater story. I flew to Turkey primarily to visit the Hierapolis Pamukkale hot springs, where people come to lounge about in the warm waters of what once was a Roman city. When arriving, the scene was so uninteresting…all the ruins from the 2nd century BC were underwater. More problematic - I didn't have an underwater camera. Bored by the photography from above water, I had to problem solve…rapidly. For some reason, I had brought along a little Canon camera called a G10 and remembered it could photograph in raw format. But it wasn't waterproof whatsoever. I came upon an idea…find a plastic food storage container that seals really well… find the thickest rubber kitchen gloves possible… and find someone who sells and can cut glass to make an underwater camera housing. Gathering the gloves and container at a small food store, all the pieces came together when I found a man who oddly sold only two things…bed cushions and sheets of glass. Oh, and he also had silicon and kindly helped me glue the contraption together. The next day, I returned to Pamukkale, carrying into the warm waters a sandwich container with one rubber finger glued inside a hole to press the camera button. I couldn't see through the viewfinder and composed pictures from the camera screen through the milky clear plastic container…and that's how I became a wannabe Christina, Paul, David, Jennifer, Brian. Unfortunately, my career as an underwater photographer lasted about 30 minutes, only enough time to make a few meaningful moments of people sitting upon history, until the hot water began to unseal the glass, and the sandwich box flooded:) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @natgeo @turkey #HierapolisPamukkale #hierapolis #pamukkale #hotsprings #romanruins #underwaterphotography #wannabe #fromthearchives」2月6日 14時07分 - johnstanmeyer
