Even when using film cameras, the desire was to throw myself into seeing, feeling the world around me in the darkest natural light possible. Yes, I am likely very late to the party related to the many new über high ISO cameras. This Instagram Reel is likely old wisdom for many. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Recently I asked Sony to send me their A7SIII camera and some lenses. I wanted to see if it’s possible to create in the bajillion ISO universe. Ok, there’s no such thing (yet) as a bajillion ISO, but a boy can dream! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yesterday the camera arrived, and in eagerness, I drove around the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, where I live, wanting to see just how far I could torture this camera. Upon opening the box, never reading the manual nor setting all the possible options this camera has, I did what I usually do…set the camera to A (aperture priority). In randomness, so I can use the camera without a tripod, I put the ISO to 102,400. Why not? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The following 23+ minute video (in two parts) is my first time using this camera, mixing a bit of iPhone images. The new iPhone has a staggering ability to see in almost total darkness, handheld. I wanted to discover if 35mm cameras, interchangeable high-speed lenses, can see in such uniquely dark, mystical spaces.
