How often I’ve walked these tight alleyways in Benares (Varanasi) during seven or more trips...remembering perfect straight razor shaves by the same street-side barber on each visit, the sounds of temple bells, scent of roti, kind greetings by others when we pass elbow to elbow. On the most recent visit to this holy city, a large swath, thicker and fatter than a football pitch, was being created using pickaxes and sledgehammers to much of Varanasi’s Old Quarter. The reason for giving pilgrims and tourists more straightforward access to the Ganges River. Those asked to leave were paid, for too many, not enough to afford similar housing. You’d imagine 43,600 sq meters (469,700 sq ft) should be enough flattened space to park a fleet of buses and flag-following tourists, removing hundreds of 18th-century homes and temples. During the three days in early 2019 I spent amongst the falling dust and debris, it’s sad how a beautification project can be unbeautiful.
