No matter how much planning, daydreaming, the first few days are most painful, standing upon an empty floor envisioning a mandala, not knowing where to begin. Or how. Jet-lagged, my first day back to India happened to be Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. I welcomed this as a blessing when later that day when Ram @kewalmauryatravels and I left Delhi, choosing small roads toward Amritsar in Punjab. Parts of this story had nothing directly to do with water, and that first night while walking the small streets of Hisar, two of those fragments appeared—pollution and the growing neglect of sacred cows. Both could unpleasantly manifest elsewhere over the next eight weeks, the fluorescent poster of a mystic man screaming, many candles still lit as this gentle mama sniffed for food amongst the plastic wrappers, felt more than enough.
