While driving one late morning along an outlaying road in Madhya Pradesh, not having had breakfast, we happened upon a small building made of unfinished brick that had three tables and chairs out front. We pulled over, and sure enough, it was a small dhaba (eating place). The shop was open, but no one was there. Moments later, a massive man walked through the opened door bearing no smile or hands. We asked for chai and paneer butter masala, which amazingly he had. Trying to mind my own business while eating, I couldn’t stop thinking how someone could have lost not one, but two hands, so entirely vacant. Was it leprosy? Was he born without hands? We asked the Herculean fellow what we owed, and while paying, I gently ask how he had lost both hands, and so began a tale of vendetta, and sadness. As a young man, Lakhan was a successful wrestler, his mammoth scale becoming more apparent to his talent. His successes at the age of 21 were so great, a roaming gang of men, some whom he knew, were unhappy with his achievements. As a means to end his career, they chopped off his hands and disfigured his face, a tale of reality inflicted upon men, and at an alarming level, women too. Thanking Lakhan for sharing his story, I asked if I could take his portrait.
