What insect has a set of wings, a scorpion-like tail, and a “beak?” If you guessed the scorpion fly (Panorpa communis), you’re correct. Don’t worry, it doesn’t sting. And only males have the distinguishing tails... because it’s actually their genitalia! During courtship rituals, males bring gifts to females—but not in the form of a box of chocolates! Instead they present dead insects, a tasty treat for scorpion flies, or a nutritious mass of saliva. There’s a reason behind all of this gift giving: mating can be dangerous for the male, as the female will eat the them if displeased!
