What’s that critter? It’s the thorn bug (Umbonia crassicornis)! This species of treehopper can be found in parts of Florida, Mexico, Central America, and South America. The “thorn” on its back helps to deter predators from munching on it, but that’s not it's only line of defense. Thorn bug nymphs have a secret weapon: an attentive mom. Female thorn bugs can defend their young from predatory wasps with a well-placed kick from their hind legs.
