The Australian native is a monotreme, like the platypus. While its spikes are not venomous, they still prove to be an effective defense mechanism. When threatened, the echidna will curl up in hopes of deterring a foe from further pursuit. And its beak? It comes in handy when the critter forages for food: the echidna sticks its beak into a termite mound to break it open and then uses its sticky tongue to gobble up the bounty.
