Who says cats don’t like water? Meet the fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus)! It’s native to parts of Southeast Asia, where it prefers to inhabit wetlands or forests near bodies of water, like mangroves, marshes, and swamps. As its name implies, the wild feline specializes in preying on fish—scooping fish out of water with its paws or even dunking its head below the water’s surface to catch one with its mouth. Well-equipped for the life aquatic, it has a layer of short, densely packed hair close to its skin that helps keep it dry and warm by preventing water from seeping through.
