For Cinco de Mayo, let’s take a look at a mysterious five-legged animal—Australia’s red kangaroo (Macropus rufus)! Its five “legs” are its hind legs, front limbs, and…its powerful tail! While many other critters use their tails to help them move around in various ways, the red kangaroo is the rare species to use its strong, muscular tail to push itself forward while walking. With a height around 4.9 feet (1.5 meters) and weight of up to 187 pounds (85 kilograms), the red kangaroo is also the world’s largest marsupial. No wonder it needs an extra “leg!”
