This bright and bustling work comes from #Congolese painter Moke, one of four self-taught artists who founded the ‘Popular’ painting movement in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Newly independent and revitalised, 1970s #Kinshasa witnessed a surge in creativity as artists sought to form a new identity for the country – one that could document its rich history and exciting future. The genre plays with satire, irony and humour and, influenced by advertising in the city, combines bright colours with text to create conversation pieces surrounding everyday social, political and economic life in the capital.

Moke’s ‘Chez Mama Tika Ngai Bar’ will feature in the fourth edition of our Modern and Contemporary African Art Sale in London, on public view from 29 March! Visit specialist @Hannah_o_really’s page for more #SothebysCTPAfrican highlights ✨
