It’s our 275th birthday! Sotheby’s first #auction was on this day in 1744 and to celebrate we’ve shaken out our #archives to take a fresh look at our past and that of the market with which it is entwined, at the same time providing a fascinating chronicle of social changes over the ages.
A #London exhibition of over 65 photographs drawn from the company’s past opens today in our 1&2 St George Street galleries until September 2019 – revisiting some of the artists, collectors, personalities, experts and extraordinary items that have passed through our salerooms over the years.
We’ll also be posting our favourite shots on Instagram, so follow along for the history of “an emporium where nobody expects you to buy, a museum where all the objects are changed once a week like the water in a swimming pool, a university which issues three or four text-books weekly” (Cyril Connolly, 1961). -
