Following five minutes of bidding between four participants (and a false alarm for a fifth—watch until the end!), Francesco Renaldi’s ‘Portrait of a Mughal lady, seated in an interior’ (1787) set a new record for the artist, selling for £825,500 / $1m at #SothebysLondon. A rare and compelling portrait of an enigmatic sitter, it is one of only five paintings known from his early years in Calcutta. It was last sold in March 1969 for £1,600, and today marked the first time any major work by the artist has been offered at auction in over three decades.

Led by a rediscovered Rembrandt depicting the Adoration of the Kings, which sold for £11m / $14m and set a record for the artist’s rare ‘history paintings’, tonight’s Evening Sale of Old Master & 19th Century Paintings achieved a total of £19.4m / $24.5m.
