In this jewel-like work, which measures 24.5 x 18.5 cm, Rembrandt has employed two distinct sources of light: a warm-toned light, emanating from a lantern located out of view to the left of the composition, and a cooler white light from the star of Bethlehem above. “Rembrandt was an artist who is as renowned for his production of etchings and drawings in monochrome as for his paintings in color, so this work is a stunning achievement in oil paint and is a testament to his ambition and self-awareness at the age of about 22.
