Jindrich Styrsky’s ‘Trauma of Birth’ (1936) is the Czech Surrealist artist’s own account of the liminal space between life and death. In 1935, during a stay in Paris visiting friends André Breton and Paul Eluard, Styrsky had a heart attack and was admitted to a hospital. He created this work following that near-death experience.

Sotheby’s specialist Tessa Kostrzewa discusses this period in the artist’s career and unpacks the symbolism.
