Now, following an 18-month research programme conducted by Sotheby’s, it is widely recognized as a work of great significance in the artist’s early career. Most likely executed circa 1628, infrared imaging reveals numerous changes in the composition as Rembrandt worked and reworked the scene, using a sharp point—possibly an etcher’s burin—to bring out the full potential of the subject.
