サザビーズさんのインスタグラム動画 - (サザビーズInstagram)「This jewel-toned portrait of a Mughal lady, signed and dated 1787, was painted during the short period that Francesco Renaldi based himself in Calcutta (now Kolkata) from 1786 until 1789. Only five paintings from Renaldi’s early years in Calcutta are known, including this portrait. Some clues as to the lady’s identity are provided by way of her appearance. Her elegant clothing – gold-striped, green pyjamas, a tunic (known as a kameez) of white organza, the gauze-like quality of which is captured so successfully by the artist, and a veil with a gold-tissue border – all indicate that she was of some social standing. This idea is corroborated by her jewelry, which is reminiscent of the very best examples that were made in Murshidabad at that time. Sotheby’s Nikita Binani and Edoardo Roberti explain further here.
