Never before published or exhibited, this untitled charcoal sketch is a rare work from a decisive moment in #JennySaville’s prodigious early career.

The drawing shows Saville’s principal subject at the very beginning of the 1990s: a subject with exaggerated proportions and an abundance of flesh, which confronts female body image in response to twentieth-century feminist theory and the male dominated canon of traditional nude portraiture.

Intriguingly, the work also includes an unfinished verso sketch - the beginnings of a head of a figure accompanied by cursive feminine text: ‘delicate’, ‘sensitive’ and ‘soft’.
