Lebanese-American poet and artist Etel Adnan’s deep understanding of colour and poetic use of line have made her one of the most celebrated names in the Middle Eastern art world, and with a retrospective at the Serpentine Gallery in London and the recent exhibition of her new work at SFMOMA she has achieved international acclaim.
Often understood as a translation of her own perception of reality, Adnan’s luminous canvases and delicate works on paper reveal a remarkable ability to synthesise the landscapes of the world around her into a uniquely refined interpretation.
