Internationally recognised as Spain’s foremost impressionist painter, Joaquín Sorolla produced inimitable light-filled canvases that blended his naturalistic style with a profoundly personal vision of his native homeland. ‘Beyond Impressionism: Sorolla and his Contemporaries’ focuses on a variety of subjects by the artist, and also encompasses works by fellow painters who wielded a similar boldness of brush, including John Singer Sargent and Giovanni Boldini. Taking inspiration from his beloved Valencia, Sorolla returned time and again to set up easel on the beaches around Spain, in an effort to capture the ever-changing effects of light and wind on water and sky, as in ‘On the Beach, Malaga’, one of 12 works in a selling exhibition on view in our #London galleries until 21 March. #SothebysImpMod #JoaquinSorolla
