Photo by @bethjwald // On this International Women’s Day, I would like to honor all of the amazing women I have met around the world, women from all walks and ways of life, like these Kyrgyz women at a shepherds’ camp in the Afghan Pamirs. These women face more challenges than most, as their communities have some of the highest rates of infant and maternal mortality in the world, there is little or no education opportunities and their nomadic way of life in the high mountains is brutally hard. But on the several trips I made into this high, cold region at the tip of the Wakhan Corridor in northeast Afghanistan, it was the women who always welcomed me, made sure I was ok, laughed and joked with me despite our different languages and opened up their lives to me. And who knows how they kept those headdresses so white!
