Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mute swan in dawn mist – During my entire time working on my mute swan project I never for a moment tired of working with these exquisitely beautiful birds. Working on a private fishing lake just a few miles from my home I’m able to work every day, in all conditions though the misty mornings that follow a cool, clear, windless night produces the most beautiful conditions. In the pre-dawn gloom the low contrast conditions can make focussing difficult, especially with distant subjects so I usually rely on the central focussing point, always the most tenacious and grippy on modern DSLRs but as the sun rises and the mist slowly starts to burn away so all the birds become slowly and softly illuminated by the rising run. So exquisite is this first light that my photographic day usually ends after just a couple of hours, often soon after the last remnants of mist have burnt away, simply because of the marked difference in the quality of the light. If I only arrived at this time then on first glance the light would seem perfectly soft and useable but when I’ve been there since first light, usually an hour before, then the difference is striking. I captured this image just as the sun was starting to rise and whilst there’s no direct sunlight on the swan itself there is a small amount of reflected light adding a warm-ish glow. The mist shrouded backdrop adds to its ethereal quality, as does the graceful, elegant sweep of its gentle preening, the stillness of the water maintaining the feeling of calm. As I seem to be both a perfectionist and a pedant with my own photography then I’d prefer that the swan didn’t have a muddy skirt on but hey, there’s always something to improve upon next time! I never cease to be amazed and I feel extremely grateful to have such a kind and generous following so thank you all for taking the time to like and comment on my work, it is so appreciated.
