Photo by @aitorlaraphoto // Masks hold an ontological status of utmost transcendence within the African cultural tradition; they are not merely profane representations. In Africa, the mask is the most significant embodiment of the hidden and enables the connection between the living, the dead, and the invisible spirits. They perform various and important social functions within communities, within a sacred, religious and even political context.
The Kôro masks are a reincarnation of Dwo, the invisible deity of the Bwa ethnicity of Burkina Faso. They emerge during the months preceding the rainy season. The mask bearers entirely cover their bodies with leaves and plush. Some do not appear for years, as they are only invoked in extraordinary situations. The secret societies of masks and the religious leaders of the African tradition zealously and proudly preserve their belief system and ancestral mythology against external threats. The caste of the Griot is intimately linked to the secret society of masks as dance, music, and their instruments are the vehicles through which the stories and messages of the sacred are conveyed.
