Photo by @melissafarlow | Music blared from small tinny speakers and Zapotec women in colorful clothing jumped to their feet to dance. The street was blocked off for a wedding celebration. I danced with my camera in the midst of the swirling festivity until the woman on the left turned and her eyes locked on me. She grabbed me around the waist and pulled me close, then swung me around the dance floor. Taken by surprise I resisted but then collapsed in her arms laughing. I try to blend in when I am working and shy away from participation. Yet, it seemed so right to be a part of the joyous scene for a moment. When the song ended I backed off into the shadows feeling a bit embarrassed but I had no doubt now, I was accepted. That is the goal when I am photographing. To be accepted so I can make honest photographs. I wanted to post this photo on International Women’s Day in honor of the women in this small Mexican town who are proud, confident and share close friendships.
