Photo by @amytoensing | In honor of International Women’s Day :: I met these beautiful women in Uganda a few years ago while working on a story about women’s land rights - specifically about widows and “property grabbing” - when a woman loses her husband and then family members from her late husband’s side or individuals in the community push her off her land in her most vulnerable moment in life.
Uganda’s constitution is progressive and protects these woman’s rights to their land and home, but traditional ways continue to override the law. The organization International Justice Mission @IJM is specifically working with the legal system in Uganda to better enforce these laws and I was lucky enough to document some of the organization's work to protect these women. It was a heart ripping story to work on - so much injustice. The resilience in the women I met seemed impossible and blew me away. These women selling bras made me smile in the midst of it all.
