All tyrannosaurs have several distinctive traits, inherited from a common ancestor, the first tyrannosaur. Even in the earliest known tyrannosaur, Proceratosaurus, a few traits that identify the group are already visible: d-shaped front teeth, serrated teeth, and fused nasal bones. But T. rex had a few other traits that distinguished it from its family, such as a keyhole-shaped eye opening, a large muscle attachment site on the back of its head, and wide-set, forward-facing eyes to provide excellent depth perception.
