Dilong paradoxus evolved about 40 million years after the first tyrannosaur. Like many early tyrannosaurs, its arms were relatively long and capable of seizing small prey. This species was also the first tyrannosaur found with fossilized feathers. Scientists now think that feathers were present throughout the tyrannosaur family—and in fact date back to the first dinosaur. How do we know Dilong had feathers? When scientists analyzed the specimen, they found evidence of primitive, hairlike feathers on the tail. Similar fuzzy feathers probably covered most of its body.
