Have you ever seen an eastern yellow-bellied racer (Coluber constrictor flaviventris)? This member of the Colubridae family, which consists of 11 subspecies of racer snakes that range from southern Canada to Guatemala, can be spotted as far north as Montana all the way down to Texas, and it likes to stick to dry and sunny areas. This nonvenomous carnivore takes down prey by crushing it against the ground with its body. How fast can this so-called racer move? About 4 miles per hour (6.5 kilometers per hour), which is speedy for a snake!
