Meet the greater one-horned rhino (Rhinoceros unicornis)! At a height of up to 6.5 feet (1.9 meters) and weight of as much as 6,000 pounds (2,721 kilograms), it’s the largest of all rhino species. It’s distinguished by its single black horn, which can grow up to 25 inches (63 centimeters) long. Native to the tropical grasslands, scrublands, and savannas of India, it came close to extinction in the early 19th century as a result of overhunting. Thanks to conservation efforts, this rhino species’ population seems to be rebounding—but it still faces threats from habitat loss and poaching.
