Meet the Aldabra giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea). It’s one of the largest tortoises in the world, with males growing to as much as 250 kilograms (550 pounds); one male Aldabra tortoise even reached 305 kilograms (672 pounds)! This tortoise is native to Aldabra Island in the Seychelles, where it lives in grasslands, scrubs, coastal dunes, and mangrove swamps. These tortoises have a long lifespan, reaching 100-plus years—often outliving the scientists who are researching them.
