Every lizard has its thorns…at least that’s what the thorny devil (Moloch horridus) would have you believe. Its spike-covered body, plus camouflage, help dissuade predators from pursuit. Another tactic? This lizard has a knob, or “false head,” on its neck that it presents when threatened. The Australian native inhabits sandy deserts and plains, where it enjoys munching on ants. It can survive in dry habitats in part because the grooves on its skin help funnel water, whether dew drops or rain drops, to its mouth.
