One of the most widespread marsupial species in Australia? The common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula). It’s a nocturnal critter that inhabits a variety of forest habitats, living in trees and snacking on leaves, fruits, seeds. The possum has also adapted to living in urban areas where it seeks shelter on roofs and sheds. A newborn brushtail possum starts out at a mere 0.2 grams—and about the size of a jellybean! The tiny animal spends the first few months of life in its mother’s pouch, where it continues to develop—then, it emerges, furry and ready to take on the world.
