Hamtramck, Michigan has long celebrated the day before lent with paczki, a doughy Polish pastry filled with custard or fruit or, for the less tradition-bound, stuffed with Cocoa Puffs cereal. The tradition continues, even as #Polish residents moved away, and other immigrants arrived. Hamtramck’s transformation in recent decades is well documented. Storefronts now display signs in Arabic or Bengali, and the town has a majority-Muslim City Council. Still, in a city with Halal grocers and a “Bangladesh Avenue,” Paczki Day binds the community. Even a Yemeni-owned halal grocery store, seen in the second photograph, sells the pastries. @brittanygreeson shot these photos in #Hamtramck. Swipe left to see customers cheering for #paczki at the New Martha Washington Bakery, and visit the link in our profile to read more about the city’s transformation.
