#SpeakingInDance | “We ask them to think about orbiting each other — catching but also slipping away,” said the choreographer @bornokwui of “Adaku’s Revolt,” her latest collaboration with Peter Born. Part of the TILT Kids Festival — a joint venture between @fiafny and Cultural Services of the French Embassy — the work, at @abronsartscenter starting March 14, focuses on a young black girl, played by AJ Wilmore, 20, who challenges beauty standards by opting for natural hair. @aj.i.a, dancing here with @breyannarm, 22 (with bandana), says she has learned much about her life through her hair. “Maybe this piece is teaching me that it’s O.K. to do what you want,” she said. “Maybe that’s the real freedom.” For Okwui, it’s impossible to escape society’s conventions of beauty. “Especially as a black woman,” she told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “For me to do a piece for younger audiences, I wanted to go into this terrain.” @anrizzy made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
