“They took a child from me.” Following Israel's founding in 1948, a number of immigrant parents in transit camps were told that their babies had died. But the families believe their babies were abducted by the Israeli authorities and were illegally put up for adoption to childless Ashkenazi families, Jews of European descent. The children who disappeared were mostly from the Yemenite and other “Mizrahi” communities, an umbrella term coined in Israel for Jews from North Africa and the Middle East. The immigrant parents’ claims have long been dismissed by some Israelis. But in 2016, Israeli cabinet member Tzachi Hanegbi acknowledged that “hundreds” of children were taken without their parents’ consent. Shown above in the first photo are Varda Fuschs (left) and Ofra Mazor (right), sisters who were united through DNA testing after more than 6 decades apart. In 1950, Yochevet, their mother, was told by the nurses that her newborn daughter Varda had died. She was never shown the body. Varda had been adopted by a German-Jewish couple in Israel. “I was sure I was Yemenite,” Varda said. “I felt it.” For her latest report for our “Surfacing” series, @malinfezehai traveled to Israel to speak to families who lost loved ones.
