Welcome to Kumbh Mela, the largest religious gathering in the world. This year, the Hindu pilgrimage near Prayagraj, India was the biggest and most expensive ever. But some holy men said the difference from prior years was not a positive one. “I give it a zero.” For centuries the faithful have come here to wash away their sins at the spot where the #Ganges and Yamuna rivers converge with the invisible and mythic tributary known as the Sarasvati. But this year’s pilgrimage coincided with a national election, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi saw the event as a campaign opportunity. So the budget for the festival ballooned. This year there was round-the-clock-access to electricity and water, art exhibits and carnivals, and even #glamping (glamorous camping). “The younger generation is coming to buy clothes, to eat good food,” said Girja Shankar Pandey, a merchant. “At the same time, they bring faith in their heart, because they know they will attain nirvana in their life.” @bdentonphoto shot these photos at the pilgrimage.
