Created in 1964, Jacob Lawrence’s ‘Menagrie’ is a dynamic work that functions as both a reflection and commentary on the artist’s world. Painted in the year that he and his wife traveled to Nigeria, the present work on paper illustrates two figures presiding over a fowl slaughter, grimacing as caged animals looked on from afar. Lawrence is best known for his deeply affective and narrative-oriented depictions of African American experience, and his Great Migration series in particular, now shared between the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
