Le repos du faune, painted by Pablo #Picasso in #Cannes on 22 June 1956, reads as a #classical #allegory on the three ages of man, as well as an meditation on the ages of the #artist: the artist as an old man contemplates his youth, as a young man stares right back. The #faun was sometimes Picasso’s alter-ego, but he is even more clearly present in the standing figures. The features of the boy echo the #harlequins from his Rose period and the striped top figure is reminiscent of #photographs of the artist. Picasso’s work often read as a #diary documenting his feelings and experiences from one day to the next. Here, it is a beautiful articulation of the artist taking stock and contemplating the achievements of his past.
This masterful work remained part of Picasso’s own #collection until his death and has since remained in the same private collection for decades. It will be making its auction debut on 26 February as part of our Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale in London.
