Appearing at #auction for the first time, this remarkable early #landscape by Paul #Gauguin – painted in 1881 – hides a striking treasure behind its #frame. Swipe to see the two first known self-portraits by the artist, painted in pared back fashion on the back of the #canvas – now displayed publicly for the first time since their conception. The #painting is also rare evidence of the close relationship between Gauguin and Camille #Pissarro, whom he called his “dear teacher”. A particularly touching detail is that it is almost certain that the figure beneath the umbrella is Pissarro himself. The most important work by the artist to appear on the French market in two decades, Le Jardin de Pissarro, Quai du Pothuis à Pontoise will be offered in #Paris on 29 March, having remained in the same family collection since the 1920s.
