the day is sharp, so cold it sounds fragile. as if each movement is shattering the air - footsteps through glass, the fabric of my jacket splintering as I bend to scoop wood into the carrier, exhale prolonged. visibly hanging in midair

having made the morning rounds we are now settled in for the day, a fire going in each of the fireplaces- and the world outside so still- it’s broken only by the bells ringing the hour from the steeple in the center of town
