'Will I still love it in 20 years?’ is the question visionary collector David Teiger would ask himself every time he bought a work of art. His collection is marked by a unique foresight that was always far ahead of the curve. This is exemplified by Chris Ofili’s Afromantics, a bold composition defined by the palette of Marcus Garvey’s pan-African flag. Akin to Kerry James Marshall, Ofili interrogates the subject of black identity within the Western canon, reinventing the black self on its own terms. The Afromantics series constitutes a love story told across several panels, set in an African Eden. Teiger’s collection will be offered across numerous sales at Sotheby’s over the course of 2018 and 2019, with the first sale set for London in October.
