#BornOnThisDay: #British artist Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898). ? here is ‘If Hope Were Not, Heart Should Break’, a monumental and dramatic watercolour from the mid-1890s. The solitary figure of the woman lifting her arms to the heavens and about to take flight towards the starry sky is probably intended to depict Spes, the Roman Goddess of Hope. The blooming flowers pushing their heads heavenward are briar-roses and white lilies, symbolic of love and birth. This autumn, the first Burne-Jones solo show @テート・ギャラリー since 1933 is set to chart his extraordinary career, through over 150 objects. #SothebysVictorian
