#BornOnThisDay in 1552, Italian artist Lavinia Fontana is widely-recognised as the ‘first female artist’. Fontana begun her career in her native #Bologna, accepting #portrait commissions from local #aristocracy and documenting the lifestyle of #Renaissance women. Her husband, Gian Paolo, sacrificed his own painting career to act as Fontana’s agent. As mother to 13 children, she became the breadwinner for her large family.
This intimate family portrait of noblewoman Bianca degli Utili with six of her children was painted at the dawn of the 17th century, adorned with rich, textured materials and sumptuous jewels. In 1603, Fontana moved from Bologna to Rome on the invitation of Pope Clement VIII, forging an unprecedented path as a female artist with commissions from the Vatican.
