Yes it looks like a supermarket but no, things are not always what they seem: each item on the shelves is completely empty, consisting only of its packaging. To buy, or not to buy? That is the question… .
‘XUZHEN SUPERMARKET’ is the first ever concept to be auctioned as an artwork in Asia. A humorous yet subversive work by leading Chinese Contemporary artist XU ZHEN ® (@xuzhenmadein), it replicates a Chinese convenience store but offers entirely empty merchandise for sale. For visitors, each act of purchasing –or not purchasing – and the corresponding thought-process behind –contributes to a playful yet penetrating critique on consumerism, advertising and global capitalism. .
