I love greeting these first few chilly mornings hands clasped around a huge mug of tea- looking out onto the old apple trees at the farm and to the waiting garden beyond .

the thought of the garden falls into the realm of summer stuff and I find I have been a bit neglectful this last week but yesterday I worked the waning earth removing expired plants and picking the still vibrant tomato crop - I've taken to making them into sauce and freezing it for the winter months ahead as the arm loads of fresh tomatoes have lost some of their charm after five weeks - but I know we will be grateful for the taste of summer in january .

but the newness of the season and the pumpkins and squashes and sweet beets from the garden have enticed me into autumn without even a twinge of loss for summer - fickle hearted perhaps but always looking ahead
