In the 1990s, before Brooklyn was a brand, there was a singular bard of the borough. His name? Christopher Wallace — but you know him as the Notorious B.I.G. At 6-foot-2 and nearly 400 pounds, he was a larger-than-life figure in the rap scene (just as he is in this mural by @zimernyc and @rocko_nyc, which was photographed by @harrisonhill earlier today). A masterful raconteur with a forceful flow, he chronicled neighborhood street life in stylized, almost cinematic detail. But more than 20 years after his still-unsolved murder, the #gentrification that has taken hold of the neighborhoods of #ClintonHill and #BedStuy have troubled the waters of the rapper’s memory. But today, after several foiled attempts for official city commemoration, @nycparks has renamed the #basketball courts at Crispus Attucks Playground — down the street from this mural — in his honor. #Biggie was not a particularly skilled athlete, but he visited the park often. “Now, no matter how much this community changes, there will always be a record now of the culture that lived here,” said City Councilman Robert E. Cornegy Jr. Earlier today. Visit the link in our profile to see more. #? #spreadartnyc
