All over the U.S., #veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are embarking on cross-country treks. For some, mainstream remedies have come up short. Many tried therapy, but gave up after encountering what they saw as poor results and too many pills. Heath Lanctot is one of them. A former reconnaissance Marine, he served 2 tours in Iraq. “This is a life reset for me,” he said. “I had put off thinking about a lot of my past for years.” But a divorce recently forced him to confront it. @maxwhittaker photographed Heath, left, with Jeremy Tierney and John French in the midst of a 3,100 mile hike along the Continental Divide from Mexico to Canada. “This walk is for recentering,” said Jeremy, an elite Army Ranger and Special Operations soldier who deployed 13 times after 2001. “I view it as my last deployment.” Among the daily ordeals of traversing the Divide: drinking from cattle tanks in New Mexico, kicking steps along the snowbound slopes of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, setting aside everything but a 40-pound pack and the promise of what is ahead. “Before modern times, armies would march home and they would get to decompress with their comrades,” said Sean Gobin, a 3-tour @usmarines veteran who started a nonprofit called @warriorexpeditions. “When I got out, I got a 20-minute PowerPoint.” Visit the link in our profile to read more.
