On one of Brooklyn’s busier commuter streets, #bicycles now outnumber cars. The 2-wheelers glide down a bike lane on Hoyt Street, packed together during the evening rush. New York City was home to the first bike path in the U.S., built in 1894 on Ocean Parkway, in Brooklyn. Still, this kind of scene was once hard to imagine here. As bike routes expand and Citi Bikes become ubiquitous, though, #cycling has become part of New York’s #commuting culture. Today there are more than 450,000 daily bike trips in the city, up from 170,000 in 2005. And though bike commuters remain just a small fraction of all commuters, NYC now has more than any other American city. The surging bike culture has intensified a “bikelash” among some community leaders and residents, who say cyclists speed and run red lights, text while riding, cross onto sidewalks and go the wrong way on streets. Earlier this month, @justin.gilliland took this photo of a commuter riding home on the #BrooklynBridge. #?
