Finland boasts endless forests, more than 200,000 lakes and 24 hours of sunlight during some summer months. But what many people don’t know is that #Finland, the most thinly populated country in the European Union, also boasts a wide array of wacky sports. If you and your spouse want to compete in the Wife Carrying World Championships, you must come to Finland. The Mobile Phone Throwing World Championships? Finland. The World Berry Picking Championship and the Air Guitar World Championships? Finland and Finland. How did this happen? How did Finland, once formidable in traditional sports, pivot to the bizarre side of competition? Finns offer various answers, but a sports sociologist at the University of Jyvaskyla perhaps put it best: “I think we go a little crazy in the summer. Mix that with alcohol, and maybe we want to compete a little bit.” @janne.korkko photographed this lake at the Ukkohalla resort, where players competing in the the 20th annual Swamp Soccer World Championships stayed.
